The Student Connection is the Top Executive Function Tutors and Coaching in Michigan

What is an Executive Functioning Coach and Does my Student Need One?

Your student is like many of us if they find it hard to get organized and get things done. Our students are often ill equipped and inexperienced, juggling deadlines and tasks.

Executive Functioning Coaches help improve time management, organization, and task initiation.
It is in effect a way to accomplish a goal by breaking the task down and developing a step-by-step plan to get it done. And for many of us who can get overwhelmed and put off our To-Do lists, this support makes all the difference. The role of the “coach” is to tailor the support to the individual’s learning style and needs. And while you know us as tutors, we have always provided this “coaching” support for our students. It is at the core of our philosophy to help students “how they learn.”

We start with your students’ individual learning style: kinesthetic, visual, or auditory. As well we take into consideration any learning disability including dyslexia and ADHD.

  • Step One: Identify what time management systems will work best – be it a calendar, time blocking, alarms, or a series of reminders. Even choosing the right planner can make a difference. We have recently seen a return to planners, and we are all for it.
  • Step Two: Develop a series of smaller tasks that are doable and not overwhelming. Remember the question: How do you eat an elephant?
  • Step Three: Create a system to execute the task. Flash cards are excellent. Not just reading them but physically, writing them out. Studies back us up on this. Writing is an excellent study technique.
  • Step Four: Learn how to manage the emotions that inevitably accompany a deadline: frustration, stress, and anxiety.

If you have worked with us over the years, you will recognize these steps are in all our work. For those who may be new, this is an introduction and reminder of how we customize our interactions with every student.

We work with many students all the way from grade school through LSAT and GREs. And we utilize executive functioning coaching constantly. Learning how to develop a plan of attack for a project is a skill students need in school, and we all tap into it for life.
